Morath began her documentation of the Danube River in 1958, traveling to Germany, Yugoslavia, Austria, and Czechoslovakia, and visiting Romania twice. Unable to obtain visas to enter Hungary, Bulgaria, or the Soviet Union, the project continued over many years as opportunities arose for her. In the '90s, at the urging of her colleagues, Morath returned to the region to complete the story, which was published in 1995 by Edition Fotohof in Salzburg.
